With the 2017/2018 football season drawing to a close, we thought we would reflect on a crazy April, where it really was crunch time for many of our players…
It was certainly a great month for Peterborough’s Jack Marriott. The Posh striker recorded a trio of top achievements. Flying past 30 goals for the season and being named in both the PFA and EFL League One Team of the Season. It was some campaign for Jack and, in case you missed it, check out what he had to say when we caught up with him recently.
Another young striker who was amongst the Awards was Aston Villa’s Keinan Davis. At just 20 years-old, Keinan was named the Villans’ Young Player of the Year! When speaking to the Birmingham Mail Villa boss Steve Bruce was full of praise.
“He came in eight months ago against Norwich and ran them around when we won 4-2. He took the heat off myself, and the supporters then got behind the team,” said the Villa boss.
“Let’s not forget that Keinan has been involved in 30 games which is quite remarkable for a recently-turned 20-year-old. It’s been a good year for him.”
A player that won’t be winning Young Player of the Year (sorry Joe) is Tampa Bay Rowdies superstar Joe Cole. The month of April saw the ex-England international score his first goal of the season in a thumping 5-0 win against Ottawa Fury FC, before another for the captain saw his side grab another win against Real Monarchs.
It wouldn’t be a monthly round-up without a couple of birthday shouts. So many happy returns to Nick Pope and Mikolaj Bieganski who celebrated in April!
Moving away from the football field, it’s been an absolute joy to work alongside Michael Carrick on his amazing Foundation. In April, Michael unveiled the fantastic Carrick Street Reds project, which is the first of many the midfielder plans to launch. Check out the Michael Carrick Foundation here.
This seems like a recurring theme but once again it was a fantastic month for Nick Pope. The Burnley stopper kept a clean sheet against Brighton on the last day of April to put his side on the brink of European football next season, which they have since secured. It’s been an amazing season for Nick and his stats reflect that.
Staying with England’s top divison, another member of the Skillequal family who had a fantastic April was Brighton’s Lewis Dunk. Lewis has been a stalwart at the back for the Premier League newcomers all season and last month was a real make-or-break month for the Seagulls. Strong defensive performances against Huddersfield, Tottenham and Burnley saw Chris Hughton’s side pretty much guarantee survival moving into May – which was then cemented with the win over Manchester United.
Our jobs here at Skillequal are all about supporting players with anything and everything they need. A big part of that is contract negotiations. April saw Ipswich Town’s Chris Smith get rewarded with a new one-year deal with his boyhood club. Chris has spent the majority of the season on loan at National League’s Chelmsford City but his hard work, dedication and commitment sees him stay with the Tractor Boys.
At this time of the season promotions and relegations are getting decided across the leagues. On April 21, Luton Town, managed by Nathan Jones, celebrated promotion to League One with a hard fought 1-1 draw away at Carlisle. There has been an incredible amount of pressure on Nathan and his Hatters side to gain promotion this season so to manage it with three games to go is a fantastic achievement.
Last but very much not least we are delighted to discuss Mr Wycombe Wanderers Matt Bloomfield, who has been fighting for promotion in League Two alongside Luton Town. April turned out to be an incredible month for Matt as he captained the Chairboys to promotion to the third-tier following a dramatic 2-1 win against Chesterfield on the last day of April. Matt also signed another two-year deal with the club that will see him extend his stay at Adams Park to a staggering 17 seasons! Well done Matt!
What a special group of lads! Couldn’t be more proud. Especially pleased for the Gaffer who has done an incredible job. This is for the supporters. I ? this club. pic.twitter.com/2Dou8lokjD

As always there is so many more highlights we could have mentioned from the Skillequal family. We look forward to sharing even more achievements next month.
